How Indian Independence was ‘Introduced’
India’s President Dr. Rajendra Prasad washed the feet of 200
Sanskrit Pandits with water, put sandal paste on their foreheads, garlanded
them, gave them sweets and Rs.11/- each as “dakshana”. Cartoon from Filmindia
magazine
Dr. Suryaraju Mattimalla: Mr. Rajendra Prasad, you
are the first president of India, and are you inaugurating the Independence of
India from the British by washing 200 Brahmins' feet? Are you introducing the
culture of washing the feet of Brahmins constitutionally? Don't you realize
you're India's constitutionally elected president? Why are you washing the feet
of 200 Brahmins to be inaugurated as President of India?
Mr.Rajendra
Prasad: Dr. Suryaraju Mattimalla Ji, I am a god-afraid Hindu, so I am washing
the feet of 200 Brahmin priests. There is nothing wrong with pleasing our gods
on earth.
